Mount Huascaran Earthquake 1970

Mount Huascaran, Peru. In 1970, an earthquake-induced rock and snow avalanche on Mt. Huascaran, Peru, buried the towns of Yungay and Ranrahirca. The death toll from the Debris Avalanche was 18,000 (total fatalities from the earthquake and the debris flow was 66,000). The avalanche started as a sliding mass of glacial ice and rock about 3,000 feet wide and one mile long. The avalanche swept about 11 miles to the village of Yungay at an average speed of more that 100 miles an hour. The fast-moving mass picked up glacial deposits and by the time it reached Yungay, it is estimated to have consisted of about 80 million cubic yards of water, mud, and rocks.

1970 Earthquake en El Peru in 1970

Thank you for having a reference to that most terrible event near Chimbote in 1970, which I will never forget. I lived in Chimbote as a Peace Corps Volunteer then and was fortunate to survive the earthquake. I will always remember it, specially when such temblors happen around the globe, as just happened in Iran, late December, 2003.

Peru earthquake 1970

Search google for the words "Chimbote 1970". Chimbote is an industrial commercial fishing town a couple hundred miles up the coast from Lima, which is Peru's capitol. Chimbote is a desolate place, the only harbor on a barren and mountainous coast with no beaches or greenery. But it is near Pacific currents that teem with fish. An earthquake in late 1970 devastated Chimbote and all the villages in the valleys inland from it, killing thousands. I was a navy officer on the USS GUAM, a helicopter carrier stationed in the Caribbean Sea. We were sent dozens of navy doctors and medics from the States, and ordered to go through the Panama Canal to lie off Chimbote to give aid. We carried about 20 helicopters, and had room for 1500 marines. We were chosen for this mission because our helicopters were the only way of getting back into the remote valleys. The doctors gave medical aid to thousands in the mountains, and put the worst cases on helicopters. The ship's empty troop quarters were filled with injured Peruvians.

1970 Peruvian earthquake

Hello, In 1970 I was a USAF Combat Control Staff Sergeant out of Lockbourne, AFB in Columbus Ohio. I was TDY (temporary duty) to Howard AFB in the Panama Canal Zone when the earthquake happened. Myself and another Combat Controller, Leonard Holmes, went with Colonel Beckett and the C-130 detachment at Howard to offer relief to Peru. We surveyed the disaster area decided to use a road at Anta as a drop zone and eventual runway. Len and I deployed to Anta two days after the quake, the first outsiders to arrive, and began directing airdrops of supplies as well as beginning the construction of a landing zone from the road through the area where, withing a week, we had C-130's landing and taking off.
