Most riding lawn mowers utilize vertical shaft engines. The power is transfered to the rear wheels via a differential. The trouble here is the engine RPM is reduced in the differential in order to achieve slow, towing strength. Go carts almost exclusively use horizontal shaft engines with a centrifugal clutch. This way, the full RPM of the engine is taken advantage of. Given your situation, I would recommend you find an old lawn tractor and utilize the chassis and drivetrain. Next, purchase some sheaves to connect the engine to the differential that will somewhat counteract the reducer...making the go cart travel faster. Remember, the differential will get warm because you are overspeeding it. Mind the oil levels and don't over do it. You have a lot of work ahead of you!

the only thing you need to make a go kart is a old go kart frame and a lawn mower motor or a old snow blower and connect the wires to the motor and to the steering sytems and a gas tank and there you have your new go kart

sup if you want to make your mower faster replace the gear sprocket on the engine with a much bigger one. make sure that it is bigger than the one on the axle. **For every single rotation of the larger sprocket the smaller one will make 4 times as many rotations.**

First of all, i disagree with everybody who posted something here. The best engine to use is a blackbird engine. BTW for you guys who didnt know a black bird is the fastest plane in the world.Of course these babys dont come cheap, and your going to need a lot of cushioning to protect you from all those G-forces.

Im 15 just like you. and im in the pros. of makeing a kart out of one to. what u need is to go to a local salvige yard and find a frame and bult the motor to it if its side drive. if its bottom drive make some adj. to it and it will work fine. p.s. you need wheels to. :-)

Most lawn mower engines are vertical shaft engines and for a go cart you need a horizantal engine. So you would think turning it sideways would work, but the gas tank is sideways, so it won't work.So all you have to do is get a gasoline hose so you can turn the tank upright by extending it.

If you want a really fast powerfull torque monster for a go-kart and don't mind spending up to 1,000 on a brand new engine(you can buy them used on ebay) GET A 500 CC snowmobile engine a 1 gallon fuel cell make a simple tube chassis definately a roll bar if not a roll cage ;) i made my set up out of my totalled 2001 arctic cat 800 triple cylinder engine for about 1,200 and it goes about 130 on a straight away if you want to push it hard. for more questions email me at lilsk8erdude49@yahoo.com

to make the lawnmower go fast you can change the pulley on the tranmission, they sell them at hardware stores, put the smallest one that you can get. Change the front one too, to the biggest that will fit, you will need a new belt as well. after you work out the kinks it should got at leaste 30 mph depending on the tranmission, I had my to 65mph with a 6 speed tranny

me and my dad were whaching tv. And it started to talk about go karts and talked to the owners. this one kid was saying how he built his out of his old lawn mower engine. And i asked my dad if we try that so we did but we can't find any blue prints. what u need to do is once u make the frame which can be a an old pedal go kart with the pedals taken off and the chain,once you have done this you need to, put the motor on the back, instead of facing down the way it was on the mower you turn the motor on its side so that a chain thing of a bike can be put on the rotating part that turns the blade once thats on you must put the chain on the chain holder then get another chain holder and stick it to the side just one of the back wheels which when the motor is going will spin the will, it is better to have rubber wheels with grip

I had an old victa 160cc engine (vertical shaft) and succesfully converted it to a horzontal format by changing the anlge of the carburetor and all the equipment in side so that it would not flood. it was a 2 stroke and might not work for all lawnmower engines but it is wort a try. my engine was at least 30 yrs old.

With the lawnmower engine is the shaft verticle or horizontal. If it is verticle you cant use it because the oil sump will spill and no oil going through

One way to do this is to use a small transmission from a riding lawn mower.This will convert the verticle shaft to a horizonal configuration. It will also allow for a reverse gear.

Change the pullies on the mower, take the deck off and make the lawn mower go faster. Have a buddy that can go 30+mph on his. Lots of fun cheap if you already have the mower. Be careful though the steering is not rated to 30mph.
